So What IS a Meme?

Good question, anonymous and unprompted asker! A meme, in its simplest, most-academic form, is just an idea that spreads from person to person in a culture. But that's boring! I bet you aren't here for the sort of meme study you could find in a textbook. A better question might be:

What AREN'T Memes?

Hang on, that's an even worse question. I'll just go ahead and answer the question you really want to ask. Memes are sort of like Internet in-jokes. They come in many different forms. We'll detail them later.

Memes have continuously evolved throughout the Internet's brief history. Like the 'net itself, they started out as bits of text. What else could they be? They've grown and evolved as more and more people merged onto the information superhighway. Memes can now come in many different forms: Animated GIFs, videos, still images...far too many for any one site to really cover authoritatively! (Well...)

But this site is about the heart and soul of these memes. This isn't some factory line cookie-cutter meme identification facility. This is a place for people who want to understand what make these memes tick!
